Data status

About this sky: credits and data sources

Stars and constellation lines: Hipparcos catalogue via d3-celestial (BSD-3-Clause). Deep-sky objects: OpenNGC by Mattia Verga (CC BY-SA 4.0, reformatted and filtered). Sun, Moon and planets: Astronomy Engine (MIT). Comets: orbital elements from the Minor Planet Center with magnitudes fitted to COBS observations. Satellites (ISS, Chinese Space Station, Hubble, bright satellites, Starlink): two-line elements from CelesTrak, propagated with satellite.js (MIT). Terrain: elevation data served through The Nightmap's own elevation service. Light pollution: David Lorenz's Light Pollution Atlas. Solar system images: Moon map from NASA/GSFC/ASU (LRO Camera), planet maps from Solar System Scope (CC BY 4.0, based on NASA data), Sun photographs from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory via Helioviewer (SDO/HMI white light and optional SDO/AIA 171 Å overlay), moon positions from NASA/JPL Horizons and Astronomy Engine. Cloud patterns on the giant planets are generic maps, not the state of the planet that day. Milky Way: user-supplied panorama, registered to the ESO all-sky frame; stars removed with StarXTerminator. Sky imagery: HiPS tiles streamed from CDS Strasbourg (Gaia DR3 colour map, ESA/Gaia/DPAC; Digitized Sky Survey, STScI/NASA; Finkbeiner H-alpha composite), with credit shown while a survey is on. Ground: elevation from the AWS Terrain Tiles (Mapzen, built from SRTM, Copernicus and other sources) with imagery from Esri World Imagery (Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics and the GIS User Community), both streamed to your browser. Positions are precessed to the chosen date; proper motion is not applied.
