Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 Apr 2026What we collect
- Account basics: email, full name, authentication tokens.
- Location submissions: coordinates, title/notes, photos you upload.
- Usage signals: layer toggles, search queries, device and browser info for performance and abuse prevention.
- Logs: IP address and request metadata for security and rate limiting.
How we use it
- Operate the map (render layers, open popups, save lists, share links).
- Security and abuse prevention (bot checks, throttling, fraud detection).
- Product analytics to improve reliability and UX.
- Support and account changes you request.
Cookies & storage
We use essential cookies/local storage for authentication, map state, and preferences. We do not sell data or run third-party ads.
Third-party services
- Map tiles and overlays (e.g., OpenStreetMap tiles, weather/aurora feeds) to render data.
- Email delivery for verification and account updates.
- Optional analytics to understand feature usage.
Data retention
Account and submission data are retained while your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and related submissions; some security logs may be retained for a limited period for fraud prevention.
Photo ownership
Photos you submit remain your property. By submitting, you grant The Nightmap a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, reproduce, resize/crop, and display the images within the map, and to use them for Nightmap promotion (web, social, print, and community features). We will credit the photographer where reasonably possible. You can request removal at any time.

- Request data deletion or export by contacting support.
- Use private/incognito mode if you prefer not to persist local map settings.
